Welcome back to our “Matcha in Melbourne” interviews where we profile all the amazing things our favourite places in Australia’s culture capital are creating with matcha green tea.

Today we have Dan and Dave from Woven Café with us. Woven opened in late October 2014 in Stephen Street, Yarraville. Away from the main cafe strip of Anderson Street, Woven quickly became a hit with the locals with its great coffee and unique twists on Melbourne cafe favourites.

Woven is open seven days, serving up tasty breakfasts, brunch, cold pressed juices and a short, but oh so sweet lunch menu. And of course, some matcha inspired dishes!

Q: Hello, please tell us about yourself.

Hi! We are the owners of Woven Café, David Cox and Daniel Marshall. Our profiles are:

David Cox

  •  a Hospitality professional for the last 15 years.
  • an and operated various establishments in Melbourne.
  • was part owner of 19 Squares in Elwood with Jeff Wong of Huxtaburger.

 Daniel Marshall       

  • a Construction Project Manager for the last 10 years.
  • a borderline obsessive foodie.

Q: Can you tell us about Woven café?

We are located in a converted factory which used to be a textile manufacturing facility. Our business model is to serve great coffee and simple food with the best ingredients and produce available.

Q: How did you first hear about matcha, how long have you been using it?

I have a friend that got me onto it. I have been drinking matcha for a couple years now, but we have been using matcha in the café since we opened a year ago.

Q: How are you using matcha on your menu?

We have matcha hot and cold beverages- lattes, frappes, shakes etc. We also have matcha bliss balls and often have matcha dishes on our specials board.

Q: What’s the most popular matcha item on the menu?

Last summer, it was the chilled matcha and cold press orange juice blend. We're working on a larger than life extreme matcha shake which should be ready to serve in a couple weekends time. Think matcha cream, double thick matcha shake, matcha kitkat pieces, house matcha donut with matcha soil.

Q: Have you noticed increasing demand for it lately?

Yes, demand seems to be increasing in line with the increased media exposure.  

Q: Do you have a favorite matcha dish?

I'm a simple man, with simple tastes. Matcha latte all the way!

Q: Anything else you’d like to share about your cafe?
